Happy, Happy Days! Finally! After 9 months of a hiatus, I’m finally able to enjoy and share with you some really great wines. Luckily, I got to start it back up with a special occasion on several levels and therefore a special wine. The occasion: my first Mother’s Day/Our 3rd wedding anniversary/New Baby! The wine: Brunello do Montalcino – Riserva 2004 Il Poggione. Thanks to my amazing husband and as usual our very helpful wine merchant Derby Discount Liquors and the great owner Pareg Patel, for recommending and purchasing this awesome wine.
So as a starter, during the preparation for dinner, we opened our favorite red, (and the wine we had at our wedding) a J. Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. I love cooking with wine.
For this special occasion we broke out the Riedel wine glasses . Interestingly enough, the tenor of our special occasions have changed when you are always keeping an ear out for a squeak or cry from the next room. Being a little unsure of the 2004, we decided to decant the wine a few minutes before we were ready to sit down and eat. I think it was worth it and opened up the bouquet in the nose that much more. Accompanying this wine was filet mignon topped with sauteed lobster, asparagus and sweet potato fries.
Back to the wine. In the glass, a beautiful deep, dark red with a light brown rim. Swirled, it coats the glass and runs down in equal drops around the edge. The nose is filled with berries, specifically a basket of raspberries, but also an earthy note. The body is very smooth, but with tart fruit giving it a little bite helped by some spice. The finish is long and the entire wine is really well balanced.
After reading some other reviews of the wine, it was noted that while an amazing wine right now, if you wait a few (5 years) it will be a showstopper.
Wonder if I can convince the fisherman to purchase another in anticipation of the baby’s five year birthday or our eight year anniversary!?
